I recently heard that 11 moose were illegally taken this season in Colorado... and most of the cases appear to be due to inability to recognize the target. Wait. What?
Moose:
Elk:
Both of the above pictures I took this fall. I can attest that these animals are very different. Granted, they are both large and impressive, but nonetheless.. they are still very, very different. For anyone out there that may still be confused, let's break down the differences:
THEY SOUND DIFFERENT
Elk Bugle
Moose grunt
THEY GROW DIFFERENT ANTLERS
Elk have branched antlers (non-palmated)
Moose have palmated antlers
THEY HAVE DIFFERENT COLORED HIDES
Elk have lighter fur with brown neck fur (manes)
Moose have dark brown almost red fur
AND DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE LEGS
Moose are all legs! Have you seen how tall these boogers are?!
Again...

In all seriousness, if you are still unsure... check out the Elk & Moose Comparison put together by the CO DOW. There are hefty fines if you shoot the wrong species. Be prepared. Know your target.
I just don't get how on earth you could confuse one for the other in this case. That's just crazy!
ReplyDeleteSome people get a gun in their hand and loose all control. Their minds play tricks on them. I also do not understand how someone can shoot a grown man sitting on the ground because they thought he was a turkey! Don't understand it, but it happens!
ReplyDeleteSlow down. I'm confused.
ReplyDeleteHeck, we get the occasional "bike rider mistaken for deer" story on public lands. Sad. Know what you're shooting at!
These people never cease to amaze me! You just want to smack then and say...did you even look in your scope? Oh, you don't have a scope? Then maybe you should invest in one becuase obiviously you stillcan't see what you're shooting at.
